Pilot project

This project builds on earlier work undertaken by Professor Nicky Stanley and Professor Jill Manthorpe which focused on the response of HEI staff to students with mental health problems.

Professor Manthorpe and Professor Stanley interviewed staff and students who had experienced a student death by suicide.

This initial research project suggested that there may be some vulnerability factors which could be used to assist in the construction of preventative strategies to protect students. Such factors might include key periods of time when students are vulnerable within the academic year and certain accommodation settings.

The pilot study also identified that HEIs play a key role in responding to the needs of other students, families and staff after a student suicide.

This pilot study is written up in the book, Student Mental Health Needs : Problems and Responses.  Jessica Kingsley Publishers: London.
